Tonya Mashburn is one of the founding Directors of Lambert Bands and served as the Percussion Director and Assistant Director of Bands since Lambert High School’s inception in 2009. She was appointed Executive Program Director of Winds, Percussion, & Guard in the Spring of 2021. During her time at LHS, the Lambert Bands have achieved international recognition. Honors and accolades include four-time BOA Regional Champions, multiple Georgia State Marching Championship Grand Champions, WGI Color Guard Scholastic A-Class World Championships Semi-finalist, WGI Percussion Scholastic A-Class World Championship Bronze Medalists, WGI Percussion Scholastic World-Class World Championships Finalist, multiple GMEA LGPE Masterwork-Classification Straight-Superior ratings, and by-invitation performances in England, Italy, and the Bahamas.
Overseeing the entire program direction of Lambert Bands and ensembles, Tonya’s primary objective is to create life-changing performance opportunities for all Lambert Band students. She will oversee ensemble design and programming, course curricula, student leadership initiatives, LB branding standards, and ongoing recruitment projects. Tonya believes in building a supportive and inclusive collaborative team environment where stakeholders are given voice, autonomy, structure, and accountability.
Before coming to Lambert, Tonya graduated from the University of North Texas, where she studied music education and percussion performance. While at UNT, she studied with Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, Paul Rennick, and Ed Smith. Tonya later completed her Masters of Music in Music Education through the University of Florida. She was a member of the 2000 Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps; the 2001, 2002, & 2003 Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps; the 2004 Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps; and the 2006 Fred J. Sanford award-winning Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps percussion section.
Tonya has had the pleasure of teaching at many premier programs in Texas and Georgia, including The Colony High School, Kennesaw Mountain High School, and Forsyth Central High School. She has also spent time teaching the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps and Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps. Tonya’s professional affiliations include GMEA, NAfME, PAS, WGI, & GIPA. Her Lambert Bands corporate endorsements include Innovative Percussion, Remo Drum Heads, and Zildjian Cymbals.
Tonya is a native of Forsyth County and is very proud of her musical family. Her father, John Mashburn, is a retired Forsyth Central HS Director of Bands. Her mother, Sue Mashburn, is a retired FCSS Elementary Teacher and Forsyth Central HS Director of Color Guard. Her Uncle, Steve Mashburn, is also a retired FCSS educator, formerly serving as the Director of Bands at Otwell MS and later as the District Coordinator of Online Education. Tonya lives in Cumming, Georgia, with her husband, Lambert High School Director of Percussion, Eric Brown.
